Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, images, and sounds often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture and in every land as a means of entertainment, education, preservation of culture and in order to instill moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot and characters, as well as the narrative point of view. The earliest forms of storytelling are thought to have been primarily oral combined with gestures and expressions. Rudimentary drawings scratched onto the walls of caves may be forms of early storytelling for many of the ancient cultures. The Australian Aborginal people painted symbols from the stories on cave walls as a means of helping the storyteller remember the story. The story was then told using a combination of oral narrative, music, rock art and dance. Ephemeral media such as sand, leaves, and the carved trunks of living trees have also been used to record stories in pictures or with writing. The evolution of technology has changed the tools available to storytellers. With the advent of writing, the use of actual digit symbols to represent language, and the use of stable, portable media stories were recorded, transcribed and shared over wide regions of the world. Stories have been carved, scratched, painted, printed, or inked onto wood or bamboo, ivory and other bones, pottery, clay tablets, stone, palm-leaf books, skins (parchment), bark cloth, paper, silk, canvas and other textiles, recorded on film and stored electronically in digital form. Complex forms of tattooing may also represent stories, with information about genealogy, affiliation and social status. Traditionally, oral stories were committed to memory and then passed from generation to generation. However, in the most recent past, written and televised media has largely surpassed this method communicating local, family and cultural histories. From Wikipedia under the

As a higher animal, man has developed a higher capacity to learn and reason and imagine. The down side of that evolution is that we are not born with the basic instincts necessary to survive, as most animals are. These survival techniques must be taught from generation to generation. Early methods were most likely grunts and gestures and actual demonstrations. Over time these grunts developed into a rudimentary language. Concepts, ideas, experiences, and knowledge could be passed on this way. Before the development of symbols that eventually became a written language, all knowledge was passed along verbally and face to face. … [cont.] Answered by john c - Thu May 29 14:01:08 2008 Storytelling and truth in The Things They Carried? Q. O'Brien (author) wrote, "by telling stories... you pin down certain truths". What do you feel is one truth he pins down? Asked by dfsavae4g - Mon Mar 16 17:43:21 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. This was a really great book that I read back in college. I hope this helps you: This passage comes from Notes, a story about O'Brien's efforts to allay Norman Bowker's guilt about Kiowa's death and his feelings of aimlessness after the war by telling a story. O'Brien reflects on his own storytelling after Bowker sends him a letter asking for a story because he, Bowker, wants to explain his feelings of frustration and disillusionment but doesn't know what to say. The letter inspires O'Brien to consider his own storytelling as a means for coping with his traumatic experiences. This particular passage is one of several that support O'Brien's contention that in storytelling, objective truth is not as important as the feeling that a story… [cont.] Answered by *~*kadoo lover*~* - Tue Mar 17 12:52:39 2009 What are the sources of the stories which can be told in 5 minutes for a storytelling competition?
