Community service is the practice of altruism within one's community. People become involved in community service for many reasons: for some, serving community is an altruistic act, for others it is a punishment. Community service therefore refers to projects that members of certain youth organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA, Key Club International, JROTC's and some high school students perform. It is also an alternative sentencing technique in a justice system. And at times groups of people will commit to perform service to the community as part of the gift economy. Mandatory Community Research has recently increased in many schools in the United States. A study was done that correlates community service with academic success; it was found that there is a strong positive association between students who maintain a weekly community service record and their GPA than those that don't at all. It seems to me that one of the main reasons for the western world being in such a disgusting mess is that community service is seen as a punishment at all!!! Shouldn't doing good for our communities be what we do all day every day and not as a punishment. I used to be really active in a gateway/mencap club. I remember the committee being really snobby about taking someone on CS. He stayed for 7 years and became regional secretary his community service was for 4 weeks I don't know what that was in hours. That doesn't mean we can skimp on street cleaners and get it done by chain gangs. If we took more pride in our communities and responsibility for ourselves then probably community service as a way of seeing what good can be done might still work but these days it's usually young people doing menial work for no pay and that neither benefits them or the community.
