What is rattling inside the chestpiece of my stethoscope?
Q. I inherited a stethoscope from a nurse , & inside of the doublesided chestpiece I hear a rattling sound. Like a tiny bead or piece of metal is loose & floating around in it. Is it broken , or is this a a part necessary in aiding the acoustics of the stethoscope?
Asked by mark c - Tue Apr 15 13:09:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. maybe something is loose..normally a stethoscope is fixed...means no rattling sound...bec. you use it to listen to heart or breath sounds, which should be clear and no added sounds.

What type of stethoscope is good for students?
Q. i am a new respiratory care student in the fall 09 semester. we are required to buy a stethoscope but i would rather buy my own than get the one from the company the school works with since it doesn't state what brand it is. i would feel more comfortable knowing what my money is going into and getting a better quality product. theirs is $30 and i was looking to spend at or below $50. the school doesn't want us getting a real expensive one because they are too sensitive to learn with. thanks!

What is the difference between a nurse's and doctor's stethoscope?
Q. I am going to buy a blood pressure monitor with a stethoscope and i think it's cheap it's only $29, is this stethoscope bad? But I will buy a Littman cardio III stethoscope in about couple months but i want a aneroid sphygmomanoter ( blood pressure cuff ) and it has stethoscope with it so do you think this is bad? What is the difference between a doctor's and a nurse's stethoscope?
Asked by Dream - Tue Sep 29 22:31:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Them most important part of any stethoscope is the person to whom it is connected. With rare exception, any stethoscope, even the super cheap ones, will give you most of the information you need. An excellent stethoscope is useless to an untrained listener, and a skilled physician can use most stethoscopes (unless you are listening for very subtle signs) For taking BP's, ANY stethoscope will work.

What type of Littmann stethoscope is best for nursing students?
Q. I am starting nursing school in a few months and I am needing to buy a stethoscope. Money is not a problem I am just unsure as to which one will work best. I am wanting to buy a Littmann but can't decide between the cardiology iii, or classic ii or classic s.e.

A. I love my Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope It comes in many colors that match our uniforms it is lightweight so that when we have long shifts they don't feel heavy across our necks. Many of my fellow nursing students have the same model. It has great sound as compared to some of my friends stethoscopes or the lame ones we had in our lab during first semester! Ug. The bell had 2 sides and can turn for lungs or cardiac. I love it, I am sure you will be happy with whatever one you choose.

How do you make a homemade stethoscope?
Q. I want to know how to make a homemade stethoscope. One that would actually work. Thanks.
Asked by loverxjohnnydepp - Tue May 20 19:14:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The first stethoscopes were just rolled up paper or tubes. You can listen to your heart pretty clearly just using the cardboard tube inside a roll of paper towels. If you want something more elaborate, check out the instructions for homemade stethoscopes below. A quick web search can find you more.

has anyone been using a home stethoscope to hear their babys heartbeat?
Q. Im looking at buying one on line, they are really reasonably priced through wholesalers on TradeMe (kiwi version of EBay) and am just wondering a few things.. If you have one how good are they? Can you hear clearly? How easy are they to use, ie how easy is it to detect the heartbeat? Im 28 weeks exactly today and I know that the babys heartbeat can usually be heard through a stethoscope around week 20 onwards =) Thanks!

A. We had one of those Bebe' Sounds listening devices, and it was a joke. We ended up just playing with it and seeing if it would pick up conversations in the next apartment...Wow. The stuff we did before we had kids to entertain us! lol I think it sounds like a splendid idea, and Since I am going to the Dr this afternoon, I will ask him if it works. He would know, He has been a Dr for as ling as my mom has been alive.

stethoscope to hear a chick heartbeat in an egg?
Q. Hi, I have a chick that was supposed to hatch yesterday well it didn't and i was wondering if you could use a stethoscope to hear the chicks heartbeat to see if it is still alive?
Asked by Livy! - Thu May 1 16:55:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm not sure you would be able to pick up the heartbeat of the chick, but then again, it may be possible. When the chick begins to hatch, it will first pick its way into the air sack. It should then start making cheeping noises, and within the next twenty four hours it will begin to break through the shell. If you candle the chick and see that it's beak is through the air sack but has not broken through the shell yet, you can poke a TINY hole in the portion of the shell where the air sack is. What this does is make sure the baby doesn't run out of air before it begins to break through the shell. This method isn't often recommended if you only want the strongest and toughest to survive the hatching. If you are hatching the chick for… [cont.]

When do i start using a stethoscope in med school?
Q. Hi I'm starting med school next september and i'm really looking forward to everything and i was curious about when you start using a stethoscope and get familiar with it? Would i have to stay waiting for the clinical part? or would i handle it in the pre clinical part? Also if you know of a few websites which give good advice for students starting their first year at medical school i would really appreciate it. Thanks
Asked by Richard Ab - Mon Jul 27 18:10:40 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We started a class called physical diagnosis the beginning of 2nd semester and the stethoscope is one of the 1st things used in the class. They want to make sure you have experience with it before you get out into clinicals since you will need to have quite a bit of knowledge before you are ready for clinicals. studentdoctor.net has forums so you can look up your particular school and ask questions/see other answers talk to others in medical school and get their perspective-realize background and the school itself can give different answers to what are strong/weak points and what people thought was easier/harder.

Why is a stethoscope the iconic accessory for a physician?
Q. Look at any photo or image of an image-conscious physician: they wear a stethoscope and often a white coat. Why a stethoscope? Why not an ear or eye inspection scope (maybe on a chain)? Or a thermometer, sphygmomanometer, prescription pad, or mallet (for testing reflexes)?
Asked by wallmeis - Fri Oct 16 22:28:00 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I use my stethoscope far more often than I use an ophthalmoscope or otoscope, and those are available at every nurses station and in each clinic exam room. I do also carry a reflex hammer pretty much all the time, but that stays in my pocket. Why would I wear it? The stethoscope us often slung around the neck simply because it is a convenient place for it. It doesn't fit well in pockets.

Health care pros: what is a good alternative to a Littmann stethoscope?
Q. I had a Littmann Master Classic II the whole time is was in school and then i took some time off and bieng poor, I sold it to a friend. Now I'm going into a job where I am going to need something more than a cheap stethoscope but I am still tight on funds. So I have 2 questions for u guys: 1.Any ideas on brands out there that are comparable? 2.What kind do you guys use? Thanks!
Asked by shygirlxoxo - Thu Apr 3 19:23:45 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Honestly, nothing compares to a Littmann scope...they are the very best (IMHO). They do make other models that are less money than the Master Classic II...you could look into one of those. I think that the Littmann Classic II or the Lightweight might be less money. It all depends on what you are using it for. You could check eBay for one, or try to buy one secondhand, but beware of counterfeits! EDIT: Not sure what you are looking to spend, but here are a few links: This one is on sale for $39.98...it's considered "general-purpose" This site also has the Master Classic II for $84.98

A. There are stethoscopes for the hearing impaired. They are a little more expensive, but they can give a visual readout of what sounds the stethoscope is detecting.
